A Tennessee Vols assistant coach that was set to join a former SEC head coach’s new staff has reportedly pulled a switcheroo.

It was reported last month that Vols assistant offensive line coach Phil Serchia was leaving Rocky Top to join former Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier’s staff at James Madison.

Napier, who was fired by Florida earlier this season, was recently hired to replace Bob Chesney as the head coach at James Madison (Chesney is the new head coach at UCLA).

Serchia was going to serve as Napier’s tight ends coach.

That move, however, is no longer happening.

Phil Serchia is joining the Old Dominion coaching staff instead

CBS Sports college football insider Matt Zenitz reported on Friday that Serchia, who spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers before joining Tennessee’s staff, is heading to Old Dominion instead of James Madison.

Serchia, who played college football at Colorado State, will serve as Old Dominion’s offensive line coach/run game coordinator.

It’s unclear why Serchia is no longer joining Napier’s staff at James Madison, though it’s possible it’s as simple as he’d prefer to coach the offensive line instead of tight ends.
