If things had played out a bit differently in the spring, the Tennessee Vols could be facing a very toxic quarterback situation right now.
But not because of anyone on the field.
When quarterback Nico Iamaleava unexpectedly left Tennessee for UCLA in April, the Vols were forced to turn to the transfer portal for a replacement.
Tennessee eventually landed Joey Aguilar from UCLA. But before Aguilar to Tennessee became a thing, the Vols kicked the tires on a couple of other quarterback options, including Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson.
ESPN reported in April that Tennessee had interest in Johnson.
“We got a damned wall built around him,” said a Kansas State source to ESPN in regards to Johnson in April. “They better bring the Tennessee National Guard.”
It’s probably a good thing Tennessee didn’t land Johnson — not just because the program is happy with Aguilar, but also because Johnson would’ve brought some unnecessary drama.
Kansas State opened the 2025 season against Iowa State on Saturday in Ireland. After Iowa State took down Kansas State, Johnson’s father was involved in a physical confrontation according to GoPowerCat.com. It’s believed that the altercation was with Johnson’s brother.
Yikes. That’s the last thing Tennessee would’ve needed after a summer full of drama.
