The Tennessee Vols were absolutely drowning. Did the Vanderbilt Commodores just give them the life jacket they needed during SEC play on the diamond?
Entering the weekend, the Vols were massive underdogs to a Vandy team ranked in the top ten of every poll in the country. Many had them in the top five. Meanwhile, the Vols were struggling horrifically, seeing inconsistency on the mound and massive struggles at the plate.
Against their in-state rivals, the Vols woke up their bats and shut down the Commodores' bats.
The Vols swept Vandy, grabbing their seventh consecutive win against their rivals on Sunday to put a bow on it.
It was a true team effort from a team that basically everyone was doubting when the weekend began. Griffin Merritt, Zane Denton, and Hunter Easley hammered the ball all weekend. Others got involved as well as the lineup looked as strong as it has all season for Tennessee.
On the pitching side, the Vols kept Vandy at bay all weekend as they allowed just nine total runs in the series. The Vols got quality starting pitching all weekend from Drew Beam, Chase Dollander, and Andrew Lindsey. Chase Burns was the series X-Factor on the mound as he closed two of the three wins in convincing fashion.
This could be the dominant series victory that catapults the Vols back into postseason discussions. Not to mention, their talent showed up on a big stage. We'll need to see it consistently, but this could have been the start to a bounce back for Tennessee.
