One thing Tennessee can do during game on Saturday that would infuriate Alabama fans
There's an injustice that has gone on for long enough that the Tennessee Vols can put an end to this weekend. There's an injustice that has gone on for long enough that the Tennessee Vols can put an end to this weekend.
And no, I'm not talking about the 15-game losing streak to Alabama (though they can end that, too).
I'm talking about the theft of the song "Dixieland Delight" (which is performed by the country music group Alabama).
The Crimson Tide play the song during games and it's quite a scene.
The only problem is that Dixieland Delight is a song about Tennessee. It might be by the music group Alabama, but the song was written by Ronnie Rogers, a Nashville native. And the idea for the song came to him while driving through Grainger County in East Tennessee.
Nothing in the lyrics mentions Alabama. But the lyrics mention Tennessee numerous times.
Rollin' down a Backwoods, Tennessee byway
One arm on the wheel
Holdin' my lover with the other
A sweet, soft, southern thrill
Worked hard all week, got a little jingle
On a Tennessee Saturday night
Couldn't feel better, I'm together
With my Dixieland delight
I have no clue how or why Alabama fans think that song has anything to do with the state of Alabama. Because it very obviously doesn't other than the singer of the song is from Alabama. That's it.
So I'm proposing the Vols take it back.
Send athletic director Danny White to the 50-yard line after the first quarter, hand him a mic, and let him announce to the crowd that "Dixieland Delight is a song about Tennessee".
And then blast the song as loud as possible over the loudspeaker as 101k Vols fans sing along to a song about Tennessee.
Imagine how mad Alabama fans would be.
And the great thing is that there's no rebuttal possible. There's nothing for Alabama fans to claim.
Bama fans have got away with the theft of this song for far too long. It's time for Tennessee and its fans to make a stand and take back what rightfully belongs to the Vols.
