The Tennessee Vols ended the 2025 season on a sour note.

Tennessee came up short against Illinois in the Music City Bowl, losing 30-28 on a last second field goal in Nashville on Tuesday evening.

The Vols ended the 2025 season with an 8-5 record. It’s the first time since 2021 that Tennessee has failed to win at least nine games under Josh Heupel.

Tennessee defensive lineman to enter the NCAA transfer portal

Shortly after the final whistle in the Music City Bowl, CBS Sports college football insider Chris Hummer reported that Vols redshirt freshman defensive lineman Herb Gray is planning to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens on Jan. 2.

Gray, a former three-star recruit from Upper Marlboro, MD, signed with Tennessee during the 2024 recruiting cycle. He was rated by 247Sports as the No. 24 player in the state of Maryland.

Gray didn’t see any action as a true freshman in 2024. He played in two games in 2025.

The Vols will need to be aggressive in the transfer portal when it comes to defensive linemen. Tennessee is losing several key players from their defensive line, including Bryson Eason, Dominic Bailey, and Jaxson Moi.
