Tennessee fans force a short but strong rebuke from former Mississippi State quarterback to his own school
The ex-Bulldog wasn’t happy.
The Tennessee Vols managed to just escape the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville last weekend, getting out of Davis Wade Stadium with a 41-34 win in overtime to improve to 4-1.
However, in reality, it wasn’t as much escaping Starkville with a win as it was simply, picking up the win in Starkville. That’s because – despite the ridiculous cowbells that State fans are still allowed to employ at games – Tennessee fans created a far less hostile environment than the Vols would experience on the road outside of pretty much anywhere else except Vanderbilt. Vol fans flooded Starkville and took over large swaths of the stadium, ruining the Bulldogs’ “white out” plans to a large degree.
And that did not sit well with one former Mississippi State player. Former State QB Nick Fitzgerald took to Twitter and made his feelings known with five words.
Fitzgerald says that “this is so unbelievably sad” regarding Vol fans’ takeover of Davis Wade Stadium
Fitzgerald played at Mississippi State from 2014-18 and saw the Bulldogs at one of their better spots in recent years, as they reached #1 in the College Football Playoff rankings at one point during the 2014 season. He backed up and succeeded Dak Prescott when the latter went to the NFL.
But Tennessee fans have proven that, if you give them the opportunity to get tickets on the road, they will gobble them up and travel in droves, which is exactly what happened last weekend. It’s a shame that Mississippi State and/or their fans allowed so many tickets to come available, as they’re having a terrific year for them so far in 2025, also sitting at 4-1 now. So, Fitzgerald’s frustration is completely understandable and warranted.
The Bulldogs’ cowbells add to the home field advantage. But what would make it a better one is if more of their fans found their way inside the stadium to ring them when a team whose fans travel well come to town.
