The Tennessee Vols are set to kick off the 2023 season in Nashville on September 2 against the Virginia Cavaliers.
Tennessee enters the season with some lofty team goals — the Vols have made it abundantly clear this offseason that their top team goal is to win the SEC East and reach the College Football Playoff.
A lot will have to go right for Tennessee to reach that goal — specifically, they'll need to beat Georgia in late November.
While most folks outside of UT's facilities aren't giving the Vols much of a chance against the Bulldogs this season, there's a strong belief inside of Tennessee's facilities that the 2023 season could be special.
Where The Athletic ranks Tennessee Football ahead of the 2023 season
The Athletic's Chris Vannini revealed his rankings of all 133 college football teams on Monday and he has Tennessee at No. 10 overall.
Georgia is at No. 1 followed by Alabama at No. 3 and LSU at No. 5.
Virginia, the Vols' first opponent, is ranked No. 96.
This is in the range where most folks have Tennessee ranked ahead of the regular season. And it's fair considering the Vols lost key players like Hendon Hooker, Darnell Wright, Jalin Hyatt, Cedric Tillman, and Byron Young, among a few others, from last year's 11-2 squad.
But if the Vols can go 5-0 in September — which would include wins against Florida and South Carolina — then they'll almost certainly be in everyone's top five.
