For years, Tennessee Vols fans have sat down on the couch on a Saturday to watch UT play, only to find that the previous game is running long — and the Volunteers are on another channel.
It’s become something of a running joke among Vols fans since it seems like Tennessee, unless they play at noon, never starts on the channel they’re supposed to start on.
On Saturday, with Tennessee’s season opener against Syracuse running long on ABC/ESPN, it looked like the Alabama vs. Florida State game, which had a 3:30 PM ET start time on ABC/ESPN, would be pushed to another channel.
Instead, it was Tennessee that was pushed to ESPN News and the ESPN app.
And Vols fans were not happy about it, especially since the app was experiencing technical difficulties.
The Vols were up 38-26 when the game was moved. While Tennessee was in a good spot, the game was far from over — Syracuse was very much still in the game.
It was a completely classless move by ABC/ESPN. And it shows that the network has no desire to treat programs fairly. We all know that if the roles were reversed, the Alabama game would not have been moved.
Tennessee fans were already not big fans because of the way the Vols are covered by ESPN. This certainly won’t help change that feeling.
Of course, the important thing for the Vols is that they ended up winning the game 45-26.
