The Tennessee Vols are expected to start next week with some great news.
2025 five-star quarterback George MacIntyre revealed on Friday that he's going to announce his commitment on Monday (January 22) at 9:30 AM CT at Brentwood Academy.
MacIntyre, 6-foot-5/182 lbs from Brentwood, TN, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 2 quarterback in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Tennessee.
Alabama, LSU, and Tennessee have been the focus of MacIntyre's recruitment over the last couple of months.
LSU, however, recently landed a commitment from 2025 five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, essentially eliminating the Tigers from consideration. And Alabama saw Nick Saban retire earlier this month. The Vols have been viewed as the favorites to land MacIntyre for the last couple of months. But MacIntyre built a solid relationship with Saban, which kept Alabama lingering as a real threat. With Saban gone, it seems incredibly unlikely that MacIntyre will commit to Alabama — especially since he hasn't visited Tuscaloosa since Kalen DeBoer took over as the program's new head coach.
MacIntyre was in Knoxville this weekend ahead of his decision on Monday, which seemingly makes it even more likely that the Vols will be the pick.
The talented five-star quarterback was seen with Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel and offensive coordinator Joey Halzle at the Vols' basketball game against Alabama on Saturday.
The relationships that MacIntyre's built at Tennessee are obvious. And it's hard to see DeBoer coming in from Washington (where he didn't recruit MacIntyre) and building a relationship with MacIntyre in a matter of days (especially without MacIntyre visiting Alabama this weekend).
"I think a big factor for George MacIntyre is about relationships," said VolQuest's Brent Hubbs on 104.5 The Zone's Ramon, Kayla, and Will on Friday. "It's about a comfort level. There's a lot of places he could go and be successful because he's a talented athlete with huge upside…but I think at the end of the day, he's looking for a place that he's comfortable, he's got trust in the coaching staff, belief in the coaching staff, and feels connected to those guys. I think Josh Heupel, six or seven months ago, maybe eight months ago, really made George a priority in that class (2025). And I think George feels that and understands that and I think that's why Tennessee has been positioning themselves well. And in the minds of a lot of people, trending as a popular choice (for MacIntyre) for the last six or seven weeks."
You never know what might happen at a commitment ceremony — Vols fans have seen plenty of disappointing surprises in the past — but it's hard to see MacIntyre picking Alabama over Tennessee on Monday.
