The Tennessee Vols heavily pursued 2026 five-star running back Savion Hiter during the recruiting process.

Hiter, the No. 1 running back in the 2026 class, took his final official visit to Tennessee last summer. The Virginia native, however, signed with the Michigan Wolverines over the Volunteers.

When news broke earlier this month that Michigan had fired head coach Sherrone Moore, there was immediate speculation about whether Hiter would stick around in Ann Arbor.

If Hiter chose to leave Michigan, Tennessee, which didn’t sign a running back during the 2026 cycle, would make a lot of sense.

But unfortunately for the Vols, it appears Hiter isn’t going anywhere.

Savion Hiter is planning to stay at Michigan

Hiter’s recruiting adviser, Adam McCann, told On3 this week that the five-star running back wants to be a “Michigan man.”

“He wants to be a Michigan Man,” said McCann. “That’s always one of his biggest quotes. It can be a mess at times when you are going through a coaching change, but Coach Tony (Alford) has reassured us that it’s a good thing. That’s spilled over to Savion still wanting to be there. He’s going to be there. He’s going to have a good career there.”

New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is retaining running backs coach Tony Alford, a move that likely helped convince Hiter that sticking with the Wolverines was the best move for him.

The Vols need of a transfer running back because sophomore running back Peyton Lewis is set to enter the portal.

NC State transfer running back Hollywood Smothers could be a fit for Tennessee.
