Earlier this week, the Tennessee Vols landed a commitment from former USC wide receiver Bru McCoy.
McCoy was a five-star recruit coming out of Mater Dei High School. He was rated as the No. 9 overall player in the 2019 recruiting class.
The California native was viewed as either a wide receiver or an outside linebacker during the recruiting process.
McCoy has the size (6-foot-3/220 lbs) to play outside linebacker. He's also more than physical enough to play the position.
In fact, McCoy is one of the more physical wide receivers you'll see in college football (probably a result of playing defense in high school).
Just check out the effort that McCoy puts into blocking.
There's nothing that fans love more than a player who puts forth an incredible effort while blocking. It's part of what made wide receiver Jauan Jennings a fan favorite during his time on Rocky Top. And it's something that Tennessee fans will love about McCoy.
It's also an important skill for a wide receiver to have in Josh Heupel's offense.
Short passes can turn into long gains in Heupel's offense if there's great perimeter blocking from wide receivers.
Check out the clip below (the second play) for an example of how effective downfield blocking can help spring a big gain in Heupel's offense.
Cedric Tillman doesn't score on that play without the block from Velus Jones Jr. We saw numerous plays like that from Tennessee last season.
McCoy is going to help put a lot of points on the board for the Vols, via his ball skills and his blocking skills.
