The South Carolina Gamecocks are in the midst of a miserable season after expecting to take a big step forward after last year's late season surge.

South Carolina is 2-6 and they're coming off their fourth straight loss.

The Tennessee Vols, the program that kickstarted the Gamecocks' current four-game losing streak, could make South Carolina's miserable season even worse by stealing one of SC's top commits.

On3's Chad Simmons pointed out this weekend that 2024 four-star tight end Michael Smith is a player that Tennessee could have a chance to swipe from the Gamecocks.

Smith, 6-foot-4/235 lbs from Savannah, GA, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 11 tight end in the nation and the No. 19 player in the state of Georgia. He's been committed to South Carolina since January.

Simmons noted that Smith, who is teammates at Calvary Day School with 2024 four-star quarterback Jake Merklinger (a Tennessee commit), is "keeping one eye open" despite his commitment to the Gamecocks.

From On3: Michael Smith is committed to South Carolina, but he is keeping one eye open. The Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day tight end is talking more with Auburn this fall. The Tigers are working to get Smith on campus and that is likely in November. Tennessee is another school to keep a close eye on. The Vols are still looking to add another tight end and Smith is teammates with Tennessee quarterback commit Jake Merklinger. Josh Heupel and Alec Abeln are in regular contact. Follow the visits in the coming weeks as we move closer to the Early Signing Period.

Landing a four-star recruit is always a reason to celebrate. But when you steal one from a rival, it makes it a little sweeter. This would be a huge addition for the Vols and it would certainly be a massive loss for South Carolina.
