The Tennessee Vols utilized the transfer portal this weekend, landing Kansas defensive tackle Da'Jon Terry.
Terry, a former three-star recruit from Mississippi, totaled 14 tackles and two sacks last season for the Jayhawks.
The 6-foot-4 defensive lineman told VolQuest on Sunday that he committed to the Vols because of his previous relationship (from high school) with UT defensive line coach Rodney Garner.
"It’s amazing that I get the chance to play for a man like coach Garner with the love and respect I have for him and he has for his players," said Terry.
The Mississippi native also wanted to be closer to home.
So what are the Vols getting in their latest transfer addition?
A person familiar with Terry's time at Kansas told A to Z Sports that Terry is "very self-motivated" and is "always in the building working". Terry showed up to Kansas with essentially just some clothes and got to work, immediately losing weight and getting in shape.
The same source noted that if anyone can pull greatness out of a defensive lineman, it's Rodney Garner.
Another positive trait that Terry possesses is that he's a quick learner, so he should quickly adapt to a new defensive system.
"I feel like Da'Jon is one of the fastest learners on the team,” said Terry's former teammate at Kansas, Marcus Harris, last fall (via 247Sports).
“He grasps all the information they throw at him. He applies that to the field…He makes it easier for the defensive ends. I feel like he’s going to be something special.”
It sounds like the Vols may have landed an under-the-radar stud.
If nothing else, there's no doubt that Tennessee is getting a hard worker who will absolutely be an asset in 2021.
