Less than a month ago, it was reported that the Tennessee Vols were no longer in the mix for 2024 five-star defensive lineman Williams Nwaneri.

247Sports reported (via Nwaneri's high school coach, Jamar Mozee) that Nwaneri was down to Georgia, Missouri, and Oklahoma.

Tennessee's coaching staff, however, never gave up in their pursuit. And thanks to that relentless approach, the Vols were included in Nwaneri's final five schools on Thursday, along with Missouri, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Oregon.

Nwaneri, 6-foot-5/250 lbs from Lees Summitt, MO, is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 1 defensive lineman in the nation and the No. 3 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class.

The highly-coveted recruit is set to announce his commitment on August 14.

Tennessee, which earlier this spring was described as the team to beat for Nwaneri, is still very much in the mix for the talented defensive lineman. The Vols won't be just a hat on the table for Nwaneri — there's a legitimate chance that he could pick Tennessee. But there's also an equally legitimate chance that he won't pick UT. This is truly a recruiting battle that will go down to the wire.

Nwaneri told On3 that his relationship and trust in the coaching staff will be the main factor in his commitment. That's certainly a good sign for Tennessee. The Vols can't compete with the amount of defensive players that Georgia has sent to the NFL in recent years. But when it comes to relationships and trust, no one does it better than Tennessee.

The Vols, by the way, currently have 19 players committed to their 2024 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 6 in the nation.
