The Tennessee Vols have reportedly landed a talented quarterback with intriguing upside
The Tennessee Vols reportedly made a big addition on Wednesday.
The Tennessee Vols reportedly landed a commitment from a 2027 quarterback on Wednesday.
According to Rivals’ Chad Simmons, the Vols landed a commitment from 2027 three-star quarterback Derrick Baker.
Baker, 6-foot-2/220 pounds from Alpharetta, GA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 37 quarterback in the nation and the No. 62 player in the state of Georgia.
“Coach (Josh) Heupel is very excited about my decision,” said Baker to Rivals. “The staff has been trying to get me to commit for the last couple of months, and now it just feels right.”
The Florida State Seminoles and Georgia Bulldogs were also in the mix for Baker.
Derrick Baker has intriguing upside as a quarterback
Baker isn’t a highly rated quarterback, but that’s mostly because he missed all but one game of his junior season with a wrist injury.
The Georgia native already has the look of an SEC quarterback, despite being a junior in high school.
According to 247Sports, Baker “has a ton of muscle and almost looks like a linebacker when you see him in person”.
Baker has also been described as an “an intelligent quarterback who understands offenses”.
With five-star quarterback Faizon Brandon, who will be a true freshman at Tennessee in 2026, likely to start at quarterback for the Vols in 2027 and 2028, it’s not a surprise that Tennessee didn’t target a top-ranked quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class.
Baker, though, could still end up being ranked fairly high in the 2027 class. A big senior season should get him to four-star status.
The Vols now have five players committed to their 2027 recruiting class.
