What started as an ordinary week in college football ended with what will likely go down as the biggest story of the offseason.
The Tennessee Vols and starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava officially parted ways on Saturday amid NIL contract drama.
Iamaleava, who led the Volunteers to an appearance in the College Football Playoff last season, is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal when the spring window opens this upcoming week.
UCLA is an early favorite to land the former five-star recruit from Southern California.
Former Vols head coach Phillip Fulmer, who also previously served as the athletic director at Tennessee, commented on the situation in a brief statement to The Athletic.
"I'm proud of the stand we took as a university," said Fulmer to The Athletic.
Iamaleava's departure from Tennessee came after the quarterback was a no-show at practice on Friday. According to various reports, Iamaleava's absence from practice came as a surprise to the coaching staff.
ESPN's Chris Low reported that Iamaleava contacted Vols quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle late Friday night to inform UT that he's entering the transfer portal.
Tennessee is expected to pursue a quarterback in the transfer portal when the spring window opens this upcoming week. It's unclear, though, if the Vols are looking for an option that could serve as a starter, or if they'll look for a quarterback who can serve as depth behind Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre.
