Tennessee Vols legend Jerod Mayo was fired on Sunday after just one season as the head coach of the New England Patriots.
Mayo, who took over as the head coach in New England this past offseason, went 4-13 in his lone season as the Patriots' head coach.
Oddly enough, Mayo was fired after the Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. New England won in large part because of the performance of former Vols quarterback Joe Milton, who was making his first career NFL start.
Mayo, who will 39 in February, has spent his entire professional career (as a player and a coach) with the Patriots. New England's decision to fire Mayo, who still has a bright future a coach, will force for the former Vol to experience the inner-workings of a non-Patriots coaching staff for the first time since he was a linebacker at Tennessee.
It's unfortunate news for Mayo, but it could end up making him a better coach in the long run.
Potential wild card option for Tennessee that Vols fans would love if defensive coordinator Tim Banks leaves for Clemson
There could be some movement on Tennessee’s coaching staff in the coming weeks
