Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Peyton Manning will never have to pay for anything in the Volunteer State after his illustrious college and NFL career.
Manning is a legend in Tennessee and it's hard to imagine that he could be any more popular than he already is.
But the New Orleans native might have taken his popularity in Tennessee to new heights via some comments he made in 2021 that were revealed on Thursday.
Vols special teams coordinator/linebackers coach Mike Ekeler met with reporters on Thursday and he told a great story about some comments that Peyton made to Josh Heupel in 2021.
Manning told Heupel, who took over as Tennessee's head coach in 2021, that Vols losses hurt him a lot more than Denver Broncos or Indianapolis Colts losses (the two NFL teams that Manning played for during his Hall of Fame career).
"He (Manning) looked at Coach Heupel and he goes 'Man, if the Colts lose, I'm alright, if the Broncos lose, I'm good, but if the Vols lose on Saturday, that hurts my soul'," said Ekeler.
I don't think there are folks out there questioning Peyton's Tennessee fandom. But if there are, then this story from Ekeler should shut that down real quick.
Manning spent 14 seasons in Indianapolis, four seasons in Denver, and four seasons in Knoxville.
It's Tennessee, however, that stands far above Indy and Denver for Manning.
