The Tennessee Vols missed on one of their top transfer portal targets on Tuesday.

Actually, “miss” may not be the right word to use.

The Vols never really had a chance in this one.

Wake Forest transfer DL Mateen Ibirogba commits to Texas Tech

Wake Forest Demon Deacons transfer defensive lineman Mateen Ibirogba, one of the top players in the portal, committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Tuesday afternoon.

Ibirogba was supposed to visit Tennessee on Wednesday, but that visit never came to fruition (Ibirogba also didn’t take his scheduled visit to Notre Dame).

The Vols badly need some defensive line help out of the portal. But if there’s a silver lining when it comes to missing on Ibirogba, it’s that Tennessee saved a significant chunk of money.

“Sources have told On3 that the 6-foot-3, 296-pound defensive tackle is set to command in the $1 million range,” reported Pete Nakos last week.

Missing out on Ibirogba makes the Vols’ pursuit of Penn State transfer Xavier Gilliam even more important.

Gilliam visited Tennessee this week, but Notre Dame is also in the mix and is a threat to land the transfer defensive lineman.
