The Tennessee Vols are reportedly "fading" in the battle for a star player that entered the NCAA transfer portal last week.
When South Carolina Gamecocks wide receiver Juice Wells entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month, the Vols were immediately mentioned as a potential landing spot.
But over the last few days, it's become apparent that Wells is trending away from Tennessee.
On3's Pete Nakos reported that Oregon, Texas, and Ole Miss appear to be leading the way for Wells, while noting that Tennessee doesn't seem to be "in it" anymore.
“Texas is in the mix. Oregon is also in the mix,” said Nakos. “Tennessee was in the mix for a minute. It doesn’t seem like the Vols are really in it at this point anymore.”
According to Nakos, Wells was supposed to visit Texas and Ole Miss this past weekend, but he only made it to Oxford. And he spent an extended amount of time at Ole Miss.
Texas is still in the mix for Wells, but it's starting to sound like Lane Kiffin and the Rebels could be the destination for the talented wide receiver.
It can be tough to know in these transfer battles if Tennessee's interest in Wells waned or if Wells decided he was no longer interested in the Vols. Either way, it's becoming clear that one of the best wide receivers in the portal won't be playing on Rocky Top next season.
The only good news for Tennessee here is that none of the three teams that are the favorites for Wells are on the Vols' schedule in 2024 (which is Wells' final season of eligibility).
