It won't come as a surprise to many, but the Tennessee Vols' game against the South Carolina Gamecocks was all about revenge for last year's blowout loss in Columbia, despite what was said by coaches and players leading up to last Saturday night's game in Knoxville.
Vols head coach Josh Heupel admitted as much after the game.
"I think everybody took it personally, as an entire program," said Heupel.
Vols redshirt senior tight end Jacob Warren echoed Heupel's words during his weekly appearance on Off the Hook Sports with Dave Hooker.
"It was big, man. It was big," said Warren when asked about the revenge factor. "Again, that was something that we try to not even talk about, right? You don't want to talk about last year. You don't say things like oh, it's a revenge game or a get back game. You just don't say things like that. You definitely don't say that in the media — just because that's not what it's about. It's about going out and putting your best foot forward and just playing your best game. I think we played a really good game last night. I think we deserved to win that game. And that has nothing to do with last year."
"Does it make it really sweet? Yeah, it does, just because of what happened last year," added Warren. "But at the end of the day, we were the better team last night. And it was just good to get out of there with a win at home."
It's clear that the South Carolina game was personal for everyone inside of Tennessee's building. That loss to the Gamecocks last season prevented the Vols from reaching the College Football Playoff. And while the revenge this season won't do much to erase the pain of missing the playoff last season, it at least silences the noise that's been coming from South Carolina fans since last November.
