The Tennessee Vols are a "sleeping giant" in college football according to Late Kick host Josh Pate.

Earlier this week, Pate named four college football programs that he believes are sleeping giants. He included Tennessee on his list of sleeping giants, along with Nebraska, Virginia Tech, and Miami.

From Pate (via Late Kick): “Nothing about college football needs to change fundamentally for Tennessee to go back to the mountaintop. The only thing that’s been in Tennessee’s way is Tennessee. And occasionally a misguided NCAA investigation or two…They still have the same resources they always had. It’s just that they can’t get out of their own way. It’s really hard to have the kind of synergy in place that it takes to win at the highest levels.”

Pate is right that most of Tennessee's issues over the last 10 to 15 years have been self inflicted. But that's no longer the case with athletic director Danny White in charge.

Tennessee suddenly has one of the most stable athletic departments in the nation. And as a result, Vols athletics are excelling — from football to baseball to basketball, it's beginning to look like a new golden age of Tennessee sports is upon us.
