Former Vols OC Alex Golesh’s name ‘continues’ to come up in conversations about SEC head coaching job
Former Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh is expected to be a candidate for several Power-4 head coaching jobs this winter.
Former Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh is expected to be a popular name during this year’s coaching carousel.
Golesh, who served as the Vols’ offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022, has been the head coach at USF since 2023.
The former Tennessee assistant has USF off to a 6-1 start this fall (with a win over Florida in Gainesville) after going 7-6 in each of his first two seasons in Tampa.

One program that could be interested in hiring Golesh is the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Arkansas fired head coach Sam Pittman earlier this season.
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Golesh’s name continues to come up in conversations about the Razorbacks job.
Nakos also noted that Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield has been mentioned for the job as well.
“Two Group of Six head coaches continue to come up in conversations with sources around this search in Memphis’ Ryan Silverfield and USF’s Alex Golesh,” wrote Nakos. “The former Tennessee offensive coordinator, Golesh, has turned around a USF program that in the four years before his arrival was 8-37. The Bulls are a legitimate College Football Playoff contender with a 6-1 mark.”
Interestingly, Memphis and USF are set to play on Saturday (in Memphis).
The winner of that game could vault to the top of the Razorbacks’ wish list.
It’ll be interesting to see if Golesh makes a move this winter. He seems happy in Tampa, but numerous programs could come calling — including Florida, depending on how their coaching search plays out.
Golesh was extremely popular during his time in Knoxville, but I’m guessing Vols fans are hoping he decides to stay at USF instead of making the jump to the SEC as a head coach.
