The Tennessee Vols will need to replace two key offensive linemen in 2023.
Right tackle Darnell Wright and left guard Jerome Carvin are both off to the NFL after standout careers at Tennessee (Wright could be a first-round selection).
The Vols added two transfer offensive linemen from the transfer portal earlier this offseason to help offset the loss of Wright and Carvin.
Tennessee landed Andrej Karic from Texas and John Campbell from Miami.
The expectation has been that Karic will replace Carvin at left guard and Campbell will replace Wright at right tackle.
That would mean an offensive line that looks like this:
- Left tackle — Gerald Mincey/Jeremiah Crawford
- Left guard — Andrej Karic
- Center — Cooper Mays
- Right guard — Javontez Spraggins
- Right tackle — John Campbell
That lineup would seem to be a good guess when it comes to the Vols' offensive line in 2023.
But that's apparently not how it's going to look.
Campbell, who played against Vols starting quarterback Joe Milton in high school in Orlando, told GoVols247 last month that Tennessee considers him a left tackle.
"The plan is for me to come in (and) be a leader, and protect my boy, Joe," said Campbell to 247Sports.
"They said I'm the left tackle," added Campbell. "Obviously, I've gotta work for it, but I'm LT1."
Campbell mostly played left tackle at Miami, though he had some experience at right tackle early in his career.
If Campbell starts at left tackle, it'll mean that Mincey and Crawford have to move to right tackle. That will obviously be an adjustment for both (though it's worth noting that Crawford played some right tackle at Tennessee in 2021).
It's also possible that Tennessee could shift some other offensive line positions around as well.
The good news for Vols fans is that they can trust Tennessee offensive line coach Glen Elarbee to make the right decisions. He moved Wright to right tackle in 2022 (he played left tackle in 2021) and it ended up being a brilliant move as Wright had the best season of his career.
Tennessee has plenty of talent along the offensive line, we just don't know who will be where yet. It'll certainly be a position worth monitoring this spring.
