Tennessee Vols sophomore offensive lineman David Sanders Jr went viral this week for a dominant spring rep that’s now been viewed more than 1.5 million times.

The rep from Sanders was heavily criticized for being a “poor” rep from a technique standpoint.

All kinds of people chimed in with an opinion on the rep, including some current and former NFL players (which included Tennessee Titans star defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons).

Sanders spoke to reporters on Saturday and silenced all of those critics with one quote.

“As y’all can see, the first play of spring ball, [I was] just setting the tone for spring ball,” said Sanders.

“We’re just trying to set the tone and be as nasty as possible.”

Sanders is a future NFL player — he knows the importance of technique. And he’s going to show NFL teams this season that he plays with elite technique.

But sometimes, you just gotta set the tone with some good old-fashioned competition and energy. And that’s all Sanders was doing in the rep that went viral.

Not every spring practice clip has to be overanalyzed (not every spring rep is going to be perfect, after all). Fans and (some) folks in the media certainly learned that the hard way this week (just ask Vols wide receiver TK Keys).
