Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker joined the third NFL team of his career this week.

Hooker, a third round selection by the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft, was signed by the New York Jets to their practice squad on Thursday.

The former Vol, who also spent time with the Carolina Panthers this season, will be reunited in New York with Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who served as the defensive coordinator during Hooker’s time with the Lions.

What will Hendon Hooker’s role be in his first game with the Jets?

Former Missouri quarterback Brady Cook, who actually lost to Hooker and the Vols in 2022 (Cook got his revenge in 2023), will start at quarterback for the Jets this week against the New Orleans Saints.

Veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor is dealing with groin/knee injuries, but he’s expected to serve as the top backup to Cook.

Justin Fields, the other quarterback on the Jets’ roster, said this week that he doesn’t think he’ll be ready for the game against the Saints.

With Taylor already dealing with an injury, it seems likely that Hooker will be the No. 3 quarterback for the Jets on Sunday against the Saints.

The Jets, who are 3–11 with three games remaining, want to see what Hooker has to offer, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he sees some action before the end of the season.

“Just in case, both quarterbacks, if they didn’t have a chance that can actually make it, we still got somebody in the holder,” said Glenn this week when asked about the addition of Hooker. “Plus, he’s a good player. If you look at his stats and the way he throws the ball, he’s a talent. We want to make sure we want to try to develop that talent.”

After playing the Saints this week, the Jets will finish the regular season with matchups against the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills.
