A former Tennessee Vols quarterback could end up being the heir to Shedeur Sanders in Boulder.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, former Volunteers quarterback Kaidon Salter “has the edge” in Colorado’s starting quarterback competition.

Salter is battling true freshman Julian Lewis, a former four-star recruit, for the job.

“Salter is the more experienced of the two quarterbacks, playing in 30 career games,” wrote Nakos. “One source told On3 that they give the Liberty transfer the edge at this point to win the competition.”

Nakos also noted that even if Salter wins the job, there could still be a scenario where Lewis receives a few drives during games.

Salter is entering his fifth college season. The Texas native began his career at Tennessee, signing with the Vols during the early signing period of the 2021 recruiting cycle (Salter signed with UT shortly before Jeremy Pruitt was fired as the program’s head coach).

Salter wasn’t at Tennessee for long. He was suspended during his first spring on campus before getting dismissed from the team later that summer. Salter never played in a game for the Volunteers.

After things didn’t work out at Tennessee, Salter transferred to Liberty, where he spent the next four seasons of his career.

Salter’s best season came in 2023 when he passed for 2,876 yards and 32 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,089 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s a dynamic player who has the potential to thrive at Colorado.

The situation at Colorado, however, will be unique for Salter if he wins the job, as he would be Deion Sanders’ first starting quarterback at Colorado who isn’t named Shedeur Sanders. And there’s a lot of intrigue when it comes to how Deion will fare without Shedeur under center.

In other words, there will be a lot of pressure (and eyes) on Salter this fall if he wins the starting job at Colorado.
