One of the Tennessee Vols' SEC East rivals received some unfortunate injury news to end the week.
According to 247Sports, Florida Gators starting edge rusher Justus Boone suffered a torn ACL during a scrimmage on Thursday night.
"This could really galvanize our team," said Florida head coach Billy Napier while discussing the injury. "This is a guy players really care about… We're going to rally around Boone."
Boone, a redshirt sophomore from Sumter, SC, played in 13 games for the Gators last season, totaling 24 tackles and one sack.
The South Carolina native was expected to play a bigger role for Florida in 2023 as he was set to be one of Gators' starting pass rushers.
Florida will immediately need to turn to their depth. And that depth is something that Boone, ironically, stressed the importance of earlier in camp.
"I feel like we’ve got guys," explained Boone. "When guys need a break I feel like we’ve got guys that can come in and be just as impactful. I feel like that’s important. That was something we didn’t have last year. We didn’t have a whole lot of depth, guys to come in and replace the starters."
Tennessee is set to face Florida in Gainesville on September 16. The Vols haven't won in the Swamp since 2003.
