The Tennessee Vols were recently named by 247Sports as the biggest "sleeper" team in the SEC ahead of the 2024 college football season.
CBS Sports' Josh Pate noted that Vols redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava is going to be a "star" while also calling Tennessee's talent "underrated".
From 247Sports: Pate: "Tennessee is a big-time sleeper team in the SEC. They've got the sixth-best odds to win the conference. Nico Iamaleava is going to be a star. I love the moves they've made in the wide receiver room. Their talent is underrated. So is their defensive coaching staff. They get Florida and Alabama at home. They go to Georgia late in the year. If they play good ball early, they could be in a situation where they can afford to lose later in the year and still be right in the thick of the CFP race. I hate saying that, but that's where we are."
It certainly feels like much of the national media is putting Tennessee in a tier below the programs they perceive as "contenders", a group that includes Georgia, Alabama, Texas, LSU, Missouri, and Ole Miss.
The Vols, however, have an electric quarterback, a deep wide receiver room, and an even deeper defensive line. If the program's new-look secondary performs up to expectations and if the offensive line stays healthy, this Tennessee team could be in store for a special season in 2024.
Tennessee Vols HC Josh Heupel likely won’t be in favor of one potential proposal at the SEC meetings in Destin
