A former Tennessee Vols standout was officially named an NFL captain on Tuesday.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell announced on Tuesday morning that former Vols linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin will be a captain for the Lions in 2023.

Reeves-Maybin will serve as Detroit's special teams captain.

According to Campbell, the players voted on the captains.

Reeves-Maybin, who played at Tennessee from 2013 to 2016, was selected by the Lions in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The Clarksville, TN native played for the Lions from 2017 to 2021 before spending the 2022 season with the Houston Texans. Reeves-Maybin signed a one-year deal to return to the Lions earlier this offseason.

The former Vol will be joined by a couple of his former Tennessee teammates in Detroit this season. The Lions signed cornerbacks Cam Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley, both whom played with Reeves-Maybin for multiple seasons at Tennessee, to free agent deals earlier this spring.

Former Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker is also on Detroit's roster.

Reeves-Maybin hasn't had a flashy NFL career — he doesn't have a long list of accolades — but he's had a solid career. And he's clearly highly respected in Detroit's locker room.
