The words NIL and Tennessee have been a good pairing in recent days. With the state of Tennessee being granted an injunction against the NCAA to prevent the latter from enforcing its vague and confusing NIL rules, NIL opportunities are as open as ever for student athletes, especially in the Volunteer state.
One particular local East Tennessee company has been pairing with NIL athletes long before the lawsuit: Weigel's. The gas station and convenience store chain has been teaming with UT athletes and continues to do so as college basketball hits its stride and college baseball and softball gets underway.
On the diamond, Weigel's has a promotion featuring Tennessee baseball's Christian Moore and Lady Vols softball pitcher Karlyn Pickens. When Moore launches a home run or when Pickens tosses six strikeouts in a game, fans can come to Weigel's and obtain a 24-ounce Coca-Cola product for free. Fans must be members of the MyWeigel's rewards program to participate.
On the hardwood, Tennessee basketball's Zakai Zeigler and the Lady Vols' Tess Darby both have a program where fans with the rewards program can buy a 28 oz Gatorade and earn twenty cents per gallon off at the pumps when either player hits three three-pointers in a game.
While many companies advertise with the university, few have gone as far as Weigel's has as far as offering NIL opportunities to various Tennessee athletes. In the public eye, that's about the best way for a company to build goodwill with the community and earn loyal customers.
And with the way these athletes are performing lately, it's paying off for the fans at the pumps and at the cash registers as well.
