The NFL season is over, but the tape lives forever.
For those familiar with Trey Smith's career in Knoxville, it was an utter shock to see him fall as far as the sixth round in last year's draft. Even with all the medical history. The guy was a monster during his time on Rocky Top and his off-field demeanor is one that every player should aspire to.
As most expected, Smith was an immediate starter during his first year in Kansas City and played well. Per Pro Football Focus, he finished 2021 with the fifth-highest overall blocking grade out of all rookies with at least 81 blocking snaps on the year. He graded out as the 15th-best guard in the NFL among all guards with at least 554 blocking snaps in 2021, as well.
So it's no surprise that there are plenty of highlights from last year that show Smith pancaking opponents. In fact, one recently surfaced of him demolishing former Tennessee Titan Austin Johnson during the Chiefs-Giants Monday Night Football matchup back in November.
The Athletic's Ted Nguyen -one of the best film analysts in the business- published the video to his Twitter feed Friday afternoon and man, it definitely doesn't disappoint:
See what I mean?
This is a perfectly-executed trap block by Smith and the rest of the Chiefs' offensive line. For those unfamiliar with a trap, the point is to allow a play side defender to get off the line unblocked, only to have a pulling offensive linemen (usually a guard) flatten the unsuspecting defender.
You can check out the full breakdown of a trap block, here.
Smith was a big part of rebuilding the Chiefs offensive line last year and so far, everything seems to be working out for the former No. 1 overall prospect.
And I'm sure there will be plenty more plays like this to come in the future.
