The Tennessee Vols will travel to Nashville this weekend for a matchup against the Vanderbilt Commodores, which amounts to a de facto playoff game for UT.
If Tennessee beats Vanderbilt, they'll likely secure a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff. A loss to the Commodores, however, would almost certainly eliminate the Vols from playoff contention.
Given what's at stake, it's one of the biggest games in Tennessee football history.
That's why Vols head coach Josh Heupel wants plenty of Tennessee fans inside of FirstBank Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
"If you have any thoughts (of going to the Vandy game), go get yourself a ticket, however you [can] get the ticket," said Heupel on The Josh Heupel Show. "And make sure you're rested and ready to go on Saturday afternoon."
The Vols will have their hands full with Vanderbilt. The Commodores are no pushover this season. Vandy upset Alabama earlier this season and they won tough games on the road against Kentucky and Auburn. This past weekend, Vanderbilt came up just short against LSU, losing 24-17 to the Tigers in a night game in Baton Rouge.
If Tennessee isn't at the top of their game on Saturday, they'll leave Nashville with a loss and a ticket to a lackluster bowl game.
The Vols, however, are the far more talented team. And with plenty of UT fans expected to attend the game, the normal challenges of an SEC road game shouldn't be present. If Tennessee can just play their game and execute at a high level, they should be able to take care of business and secure a playoff spot on Saturday afternoon.
