McCoy hasn’t played yet this season after suffering a torn ACL while training during the offseason.
The uncertainty surrounding McCoy’s status has led to some speculation that he’s sitting out before entering the 2026 NFL Draft (McCoy is projected to be a first-round selection).
VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs, however, said on Friday during his weekly appearance on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will that the narrative that McCoy is sitting out is “unfair.”
Brent Hubbs clears the air on Tennessee Vols cornerback Jermod McCoy
“Jermod McCoy has not done team stuff on the practice field,” said Hubbs. “At some point, he’s going to have to take a little contact, I think, before you let him go back out there. He’s not going to play this week (against UAB). It’s hard to imagine him bouncing back next Monday and suddenly being ready for Starkville, Mississippi (UT plays Mississippi State on September 27).
“So I’m kind of looking more toward maybe Arkansas, coming out of the open date, as kind of the best case scenario for him. I think the narrative that he doesn’t want to play, or that he’s sitting out, is an unfair narrative. This guy is engaged with his team. He’s helping the young guys. He’s rehabbing and trying to get there every day. He wants to play football. I think he understands he needs to play football and show that he’s back. So, he’s trying to get there. But there’s still another hurdle or two for him to clear. And the next hurdle, in my mind, is he’s got to get to team periods in practice and go through some team stuff, which he’s not done to this point.”
McCoy is a game-changer for the Vols. He’s one of the best defensive backs in all of college football. Getting McCoy back for the second half of the season could be the difference between Tennessee making the College Football Playoff and falling short.
The good news for the Vols is that it appears McCoy should return at some point in October.

Texas QB Arch Manning and Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar are exposing a harsh truth about college football that should worry coaches
Texas Longhorns redshirt sophomore quarterback Arch Manning entered the 2025 college football season as a player who was viewed as a “can’t miss” talent in his first year as a full-time starter. Manning, however, has struggled a bit to start the season. He went 11-for-25 for 111 yards, an interception, and a touchdown in a […]
