The Tennessee Vols’ biggest concern just got even bigger right before the start of the 2025 college football season
The Tennessee Vols have several big concerns entering the 2025 college football season, including the quarterback position, the new look offensive line, and the thin wide receiver room. The Tennessee Vols have several big concerns entering the 2025 college football season, including the quarterback position, the new look offensive line, and the thin wide receiver room.
Which concern is the biggest for the Vols is debatable. Several analysts, though, seem to agree that it’s Tennessee’s inexperienced wide receiver room.
And that thin wide receiver room just became an even bigger concern.
According to a report from the Knoxville News Sentinel, Vols redshirt junior wide receiver Chris Brazzell was arrested on Friday for driving with a suspended license and speeding.
From the Knoxville News Sentinel: At about 8:57 p.m. on Aug. 8, police clocked Brazzell driving 60 mph in a 35 mph zone in a black Dodge Charger across the Henley Street Bridge in downtown Knoxville near UT campus, the KPD report said. Police said Brazzell produced a U.S. passport, but he told the officer that he didn’t have his driver’s license with him. The officer then checked motor vehicle records, which revealed that Brazzell’s license was suspended for failing to appear in court in Blount County on Aug. 15, 2024, according to the report.
“We are aware of the traffic stop involving Chris Brazzell II and have no further comment at this time,” said a Tennessee spokesperson in a statement to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
Brazzell, who hasn’t been practicing during fall camp after recently undergoing a procedure, is Tennessee’s only returning starting wide receiver. Tennessee’s other top wide receiver options are sophomore Mike Matthews (seven career receptions), redshirt freshman Braylon Staley (three career receptions), true freshman Travis Smith, true freshman Radarious Jackson, true freshman Joakim Dodson, and redshirt freshman Amari Jefferson (zero career receptions).
It’s unclear if Brazzell will face any sort of discipline for the arrest. Either way, it’s easy to see how Tennessee’s lack of experienced depth at wide receiver is a big concern. The Vols are just a couple of bad breaks away from starting a group of wide receivers that has zero college football experience.
