Tennessee Vols head coach Tony Vitello paid tribute to UT legend Pat Summitt on Friday ahead of the College World Series finals in Omaha in a unique way.
While speaking with the media on Friday, Vitello was asked who he would pick to throw out the first pitch at the College World Series if he could pick anyone.
Vitello initially said former Tennessee baseball coach Rod Delmonico before pointing out (a couple of questions later) that the real answer is the late Pat Summitt.
"If you get one pick, it’s Pat Summitt," said Vitello. "Me and Frank (Anderson) went to lunch one time with a former worker who helped out the women’s basketball team. The only topic we’re allowed to talk about is Pat stories.
"As you go on, the banners are cool, but that’s not what everybody talks about. It’s how she went about her business and what type of character she instilled in the players. Pretty awesome. So I think that’s what her championship was — despite all the banners. And a byproduct was a whole hell of a lot of wins because she was a winner."
There will never be another college basketball coach that compares to Summitt. She was, and still is, the standard when it comes to college basketball.
Good on Tony V for shouting on Summitt on the day before the biggest series of his coaching career. It wasn't something that was expected, but it was certainly something that lifelong Tennessee fans will appreciate.
