UAB head coach Trent Dilfer went viral on Saturday before his team kicked off against the Tennessee Vols when ESPN’s cameras caught him taking photos with his cell phone on the sideline.

Dilfer’s team lost 56-24 to the Volunteers on Saturday afternoon in Knoxville.

Trent Dilfer explains why he had his phone out before the Tennessee game

After the game, Dilfer was asked why he had his phone on the sideline before the game.

Dilfer explained that he was sending his pregnant daughter a video of the environment at Neyland.

“Yeah, my phone’s on the sideline every game,” said Dilfer. “I have a daughter who’s getting ready to give birth, and I wanted to show her the environment. And I always FaceTime or send a video to my grandson.”

That’s certainly a fair answer from Dilfer. As a fellow dad, I can’t blame him. Still, it’s unusual to see a head coach anywhere close to a cell phone just moments before kick off.
