Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs is feeling optimistic about his alma mater’s chances on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Volunteers are searching for their first win in Tuscaloosa since 2003.

Most of the matchups between Tennessee and Alabama in Tuscaloosa over the last 20 years haven’t been close.

Dobbs, though, nearly led the Vols to a win in Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2015 against a really, really good Alabama team (it was the prime Nick Saban era).

The Vols took a lead late in the fourth quarter against Alabama, but a Derrick Henry touchdown run near the end of the game put the Crimson Tide over the top. Bama then held on for a 19-14 win.

Former Vols QB Josh Dobbs says UT is “primed to go into Tuscaloosa and plant that Tennessee flag”

While the Vols are in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night, Dobbs will actually be in Nashville as the New England Patriots prepare for a matchup against the Tennessee Titans (Dobbs is in his first season with the Patriots).

The former Tennessee quarterback joined The GDP Podcast this week and he shared some thoughts on the Vols’ upcoming matchup against the Crimson Tide.

“We’re rolling right now,” said Dobbs. “They’re playing good football, but we’ve gone on the road. We’ve been tested. I think we’re primed to go into Tuscaloosa and plant that Tennessee flag. So, it’s definitely gonna be a great Saturday. I know the weather will be gorgeous — it’s going to be nice, crisp fall air. I’m excited. I’ll be tuned into the game every second.”

Dobbs has Tennessee winning 34-31 on a late field goal.

“It’s gonna be rocking down there,” said Dobbs. “We’ve been known to start fast, so I think we keep that up and we score early. As I said, Alabama still has players. They’ve been playing well, it’s going to be back and forth. But I think game winning field goal, 34-31 the good guys.”

Not many folks (if any) in the national media are giving the Volunteers much of a chance in this game. Maybe that’s a good thing for Tennessee — Josh Heupel’s teams always seem to play better when they have a chip on their shoulder.

We’ll see if Dobbs’ prediction is accurate on Saturday night.
