It’s officially firing season in college football.

A couple of Power-4 head coaches — Brent Pry at Virginia Tech and DeShaun Foster at UCLA — were fired on Sunday.

Foster, who went 5-10 in 15 games as UCLA’s head coach, was canned after getting off to an 0-3 start with former Tennessee Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava under center (former UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar, meanwhile, is thriving with the Volunteers).

Pry was also fired after going 0-3 in his first three weeks of the season.

Pair of former Vols assistant coaches named as options to replace Brent Pry at Virginia Tech

A couple of former Vols assistant coaches were quickly named as options on Sunday to replace Pry in Blacksburg.

On3’s Pete Nakos pointed out former Vols offensive coordinators Alex Golesh and Tyson Helton as potential candidates to take over at Virginia Tech.

Golesh, who is in his third season as the head coach at USF, served as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022.

Helton, who is in his seventh season as the head coach at Western Kentucky, was Tennessee’s offensive coordinator in 2018 (the first season of the Jeremy Pruitt era).

I don’t think Golesh will leave USF for Virginia Tech. I think Golesh is happy at USF for now and isn’t in a hurry to leave for “the next big thing”. I would expect Golesh to be patient when it comes leaving USF for a bigger job.

Helton seems like a much more likely option for the Hokies — especially since he’s been next door in Kentucky for the last seven seasons.

Ultimately, though, my money is on South Carolina’s Shane Beamer taking over at Virginia Tech. I think Beamer is happy at South Carolina, but it could be tough to pass up going home to Virginia Tech, where Frank Beamer (Shane’s father) was the head coach for nearly 30 years (Shane spent five seasons as the running backs coach for the Hokies from 2011 to 2015).

Beamer leaving South Carolina for Virginia Tech could set off a wild domino effect of coaching moves. It’s only September, but it’s already shaping up to be a crazy offseason.

‘They grabbed us a lot’ – Kirby Smart sounds like a hypocrite while giving the Tennessee Vols’ defense a backhanded compliment

Kirby Smart almost did it. Smart almost gave the Tennessee Vols’ defense a much deserved compliment after the Georgia Bulldogs’ 44-41 overtime win in Knoxville on Saturday. But the longtime Georgia head coach couldn’t resist sneaking in a snarky comment — which many fans will likely consider a hypocritical comment — while attempting to compliment […]
