The internet has been abuzz this weekend with rumors that Alabama Crimson Tide redshirt junior quarterback Ty Simpson could enter the NCAA transfer portal.

If Simpson were to enter the portal, the Tennessee Vols would immediately be connected to the former five-star recruit.

Simpson and the Vols, of course, have some history. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel heavily recruited Simpson in early 2021.

Heupel, however, had just been hired by the Vols the previous month. He simply didn’t have enough time to beat out Alabama and Nick Saban for Simpson.

Simpson is viewed by some analysts as one of the top draft-eligible quarterbacks ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Tennessee native, however, had some uneven performances down the stretch in 2025 that likely took him out of the No. 1 overall pick conversation.

As a result, it’s possible Simpson could return to college in 2026 (and a transfer is a possibility given the young quarterback talent on Alabama’s roster).

Simpson’s agent, Peter Webb, told On3’s Pete Nakos on Sunday that no decision has been made yet.

“No decisions have been made about Ty declaring for the draft at this point, and he is still evaluating everything with his family and close advisors,” said Webb to On3.

The Vols are looking to add a transfer quarterback to the roster. Simpson is an elite talent who grew up watching Tennessee football. He would undoubtedly be a great fit for the Volunteers.

But is Simpson to Tennessee a realistic possibility?

I think it’s probably unlikely (I still think he will enter the NFL Draft), but you never say never in this current era of college football, where the unexpected seems to happen daily.

The transfer portal is set to close on Jan. 16, so Simpson doesn’t have much time to make a decision.
