Virginia Cavaliers head coach Tony Elliott made some comments about the Tennessee Vols on Monday that were overlooked thanks to a tweet from UT athletic director Danny White.

White took exception to some comments that Elliott made about how "close" he was to taking the Tennessee head coaching job in 2021 that was eventually offered to Josh Heupel.

Because of White's tweet, some of Elliott's other comments about Tennessee went a bit unnoticed.

The Virginia head coach actually complimented Tennessee as a program — calling UT a blue blood and a top tier program — before noting that playing the Vols will be a great way to see where the Cavaliers are as a football program.

"I'm excited about our matchup, when we play them, to kind of see where we are as a program," said Elliott. "I think you have to play games like this to get a barometer and to gauge where we're at. It either tells us, okay, we're ahead of where we need to be or you know what, we still got a good significant amount of work to do. But I'm excited about the opportunity to play these guys."

Elliott may be mistaken about the way the Tennessee coaching search played out in 2021 (according to Danny White's tweet), but he still showed a lot of respect for the Vols' current team. And it's clear that he's expecting a tough battle on September 2 in Nashville when Virginia takes on Tennessee.
