In 2022, the Tennessee Volunteers were given a raw deal in the polls, falling behind the Alabama Crimson Tide by one spot, despite having matching records and the Vols dealing their rivals a 52-49 defeat. That was a tough pill for UT fans to swallow.

This one isn't nearly as much so.

Tennessee dropped two spots in Sunday's AP Top 25 Poll to #11 after a sluggish and unimpressive 30-13 win over Austin Peay on Saturday.  Alabama checked in at #10, ahead of the Vols by just 24 points.

Tennessee doesn't have as much to blame this time around except themselves, as they looked very little like a top 10 team on Saturday.  However, they're still only one week removed from a dominant performance against Virginia in a 49-13 rout.

Meanwhile, Alabama struggled against a good Texas team, falling at home 34-24.  Despite what turned out to be a rather convincing loss, as Texas led for most of the game, Alabama stayed inside the top 10.  It seems like voters tend to give Alabama the benefit of the doubt, while Tennessee still hasn't earned that level of trust yet.

However, a win against Florida in the Swamp on Saturday would help continue to alter that perception.  Josh Heupel, Joe Milton, and the Vols can control their own narrative and force the media voters to give them that benefit of the doubt in the coming weeks.
