2025 was a tough season for Tennessee Vols kicker Max Gilbert.

Gilbert connected on 14-of-19 field goal attempts and he converted all 64 of his PAT attempts.

Statistically, it wasn’t a terrible season for Gilbert.

Several of the kicks that Gilbert missed, however, came in critical moments, such as the missed game winner against Georgia, a 37-yard miss in the loss to Oklahoma, and a miss in the 30-28 loss to Illinois in the Music City Bowl.

Max Gilbert is not expected to return to Tennessee in 2026

VolQuest’s Austin Price joined WNML’s Josh and Swain on Friday and shared the latest on Gilbert.

Price doesn’t believe Gilbert will be a Vol for much longer.

“I don’t believe Max Gilbert will be a Tennessee Vol much longer,” said Price. “I would expect him to enter the transfer portal. I think this season was rough on Max. Obviously, he had some misses, but he had some big misses. It’s not the number of misses, it’s the impact of the misses.

“And I think he heard a lot about it on social media, and I don’t think he was having a whole lot of fun. I think he has been leaving since before the bowl game, in my opinion. But yeah, I don’t expect him to be back here. And I’d expect Tennessee to be in the market for a kicker.”

Gilbert is obviously a talented kicker, but he could probably use a fresh start after the way this past season went for him.

Update:

Gilbert announced that he’s officially entering the portal.
