‘I think they’re going to finish second in that race’ – Insider shares latest thoughts on Tennessee’s pursuit of a transfer QB
The Tennessee Vols will likely add a transfer quarterback to their roster this offseason.
Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel essentially confirmed this week that he’ll look to add a third quarterback to the roster this offseason.
The only reason that wouldn’t be the case is if starting quarterback Joey Aguilar is granted another season of eligibility before the transfer portal opens on Jan. 2, which at this point appears unlikely.
No one, however, seems to know which transfer quarterbacks will be at the top of Heupel’s wish list. Tennessee could choose to pursue one of the top options in the portal or look to add depth to serve as competition for rising redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and rising true freshman Faizon Brandon.
College football insider shares latest thoughts on Tennessee’s pursuit of a transfer quarterback
One name that’s been connected to Tennessee is Cincinnati transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who reportedly has immediate family that lives in Knoxville.
Sorsby is considered by many to be one of the top transfer options available.
Texas Tech, though, is viewed as the favorite for Sorbsy.
“Tennessee is certainly going to address that in the portal,” said On3’s Chris Low on WNML’s Josh and Swain this week. “I think Sorsby is a guy they like a lot, from Cincinnati. He’s clearly got ties to Knoxville — his family lives here. But I think they’re going to finish second in that race to Texas Tech.
“But I think they’ve got to have somebody. I really do. I don’t think MacIntyre, physically — he can throw it — but I don’t know physically if he’s ready. He’s still got to get bigger and stronger. His frame needs to bulk up some. And that’s sort of been his challenge since he got here; it’ll be his challenge this offseason. But there’s some work to be done there at that position for Tennessee, no question.”
Sorsby is expected to command somewhere around $4 million on the open market, which could be outside of Tennessee’s budget. That’s speculation on my part, but the Vols are already paying MacIntyre and Brandon significant money. How much more would they be willing to pay at the quarterback position?
Tennessee likes to keep things quiet when it comes to player acquisition, so we’ll have to see how its pursuit of a quarterback unfolds over the next couple of weeks.
