Tennessee Vols legend Peyton Manning was asked this week at the premier of the Netflix series "Receiver" (which is a production of Manning's Omaha Productions) which wide receiver in NFL history he'd love to throw to (that he never got a chance to throw to as a pro).
And Manning offered a bit of an unexpected response.
The sheriff went with former Baltimore Colts wide receiver Raymond Berry, who turned 91 earlier this year.
"I got to play with a number of them in the Pro Bowl," said Manning. "I got to play with Jerry Rice and Tony Gonzalez, so I guess that eliminates them. Playing with Marvin [Harrison] and Reggie [Wayne] and Demaryius [Thomas] and Emmanuel [Sanders] in real football. One? Raymond Berry, [an] old Baltimore Colt. I'm going with Raymond Berry. Got to spend some time with him. He was a true master of his craft. The way he studied film, the way he studied precision route running. Johnny Unitas and Raymond Berry had great timing. I think it would be Raymond Berry."
There are a couple of subtle things about that answer that are very Peyton-ish.
For starters, it's not a surprise that Peyton answered that question while also giving a shoutout to a few of his former teammates as well as a couple of great receivers that overlapped with his career in the NFL.
Secondly, it's also not a surprise that Peyton chose a player connected to the Colts franchise. Peyton loves NFL history. And he's always showed a lot of respect for those that came before him — especially when it comes to the Indianapolis Colts, the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in 1998.
Personally, I'd love to see Peyton throw to a couple of guys who are playing today. Can you imagine Peyton on the field with Justin Jefferson or Ja'Marr Chase? Or how about with Puka Nacua or Tyreek Hill? It wouldn't be fair for defensive backs in the NFL…
