Tennessee Vols legend Ron Slay made his mark in Knoxville on the basketball court, but he ended up on Rocky Top thanks to a football game.

Slay, the 2003 SEC player of the year, joined Charlie Burris and I on The Big Orange Podcast earlier this week.

And he had plenty of fun stories to tell and insight to give.

One of the stories that Slay told was about how he took his unofficial visit to Tennessee in 1998 for the Florida football game.

That game, of course, was the famous "pandemonium reigns" game. And before this year's Alabama game, it was the last time Vols fans stormed the field after a big win.

Slay told us that after attending that game, he knew Tennessee was the place for him. And he didn't just want to commit to the Vols, he wanted to sign on the spot.

"The reason I committed was because my unofficial visit was the 98 Florida game when Tennessee beat them," said Slay. "I left that game saying 'hey, Coach — I was telling Coach [Steve] Smith on our way back to Oak Hill — hey man, call them and tell them I'm ready to sign tomorrow'."

Slay's comments about committing after that wild 1998 Florida game come just weeks after the Vols' massive win over Alabama.

And I imagine that win over Alabama will have the same impact on recruits and potential recruits.

There's nothing like the atmosphere at Neyland when things are going well for Tennessee. And right now, it's all coming up aces for the Volunteers.

Thanks in part to that win over Alabama, everything "coming up aces" could be the new normal for Tennessee.
