Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar joined an exclusive club this week.

The California native guided the Volunteers to a 31-11 win over the Florida Gators in Gainesville on Saturday night.

Aguilar is only the second Tennessee quarterback to win in the Swamp since 1971, joining another California native, Casey Clausen, on that very short list (Clausen won in the Swamp in 2001 and 2003).

Aguilar arrived at Tennessee in May with just one season of eligibility remaining.

There’s a chance, though, that Aguilar could gain another season of eligibility after he joined Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia’s amended complaint, that is seeking to strike down the NCAA’s junior college eligibility rules.

Aguilar has only played three seasons of FBS football, including this season. He played two seasons of junior college football at Diablo Valley in 2021 and 2022.

Aguilar was asked after the win against Florida about his plans for next season now that he’s joined the complaint.

“No, I still got the same answer,” said Aguilar. “I’m just going to finish out this year and see what happens.”

Earlier this month, Aguilar was asked the same question and offered a similar answer.

“Gonna try to see where I can go at the next level, and if something happens, something happens,” said Aguilar after Tennessee’s second bye week.

It sounds like Aguilar is leaving the door open to a return, but he’s essentially in wait-and-see mode.

The best-case scenario for the Vols would be for Aguilar to return in 2026, allowing Tennessee to take its time with George MacIntyre and Faizon Brandon. It would also be only the second time that Tennessee’s had a starting quarterback return for a second season under Josh Heupel (Hendon Hooker in 2021 and 2022 is the other).
