Tennessee Vols legend Peyton Manning was in Knoxville on Saturday to watch his alma mater play the Georgia Bulldogs.

So it was fitting that Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar put on a Peyton Manning-like performance in front of a sold out crowd at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee wasn’t able to come out with the win — the Vols fell 44-41 in overtime — but Aguilar was terrific, passing for 371 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for a touchdown.

According to CBS Sports, Aguilar is the first Tennessee quarterback since Manning to have four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown against a ranked opponent.

Pretty impressive against a team that has effectively shut down Tennessee’s offense in recent years.

Joey Aguilar is the leader the Tennessee Vols needed

Aguilar has a terrific story — he’s had to fight for everything he’s earned in this sport. From nearly giving up the sport to junior college to Appalachian State to getting cast aside at UCLA in favor of Nico Iamaleava, it hasn’t been a smooth journey for Aguilar.

But Aguilar isn’t interested in being the center of attention — he just wants to help the Vols win games.

“I definitely wouldn’t have even thought of it,” said Aguilar when asked if it’s hard to believe the situation he’s in at Tennessee. “But I’m here now. And the main goal is this team, not just me. I know it’s a great story and stuff like that, but my main focus is to do my job and help this team win games.”

That’s the kind of elite leadership at the quarterback position that championship teams need. The Vols may have lost to the Bulldogs on Saturday, but they showed they can compete with the top talent in the nation. In fact, Tennessee had Georgia feeling lucky to leave Neyland with a win.
