The takes about the Tennessee Vols’ offense being “gimmicky” might be a thing of the past after what we’ve seen early this season.

Tennessee still utilizes tempo and wide splits when it makes sense, but the Vols are also using more pro-style concepts this season.

Former Vols quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, who breaks down plays from Tennessee’s offense each week on his YouTube channel, has pointed out numerous plays from UT this season that look like they’re straight out of an NFL offense.

The play below from Tennessee’s overtime loss to Georgia, for example, shows the Vols using a more condensed formation (receivers lined up inside the numbers) than they typically use. It also shows Tennessee wide receiver Chris Brazzell running an excellent NFL-style route.

Guarantano also pointed out a play Tennessee ran against Syracuse that soon-to-be Hall of Famer Tom Brady often used during his NFL career.

Jarrett Guarantano sends a message to recruits about Tennessee’s offense

After breaking down Tennessee’s offense in the first three games of the season, Guarantano has a takeaway that the Vols’ coaching staff will almost certainly appreciate.

“This offense should make every QB, RB, WR, TE, and OL recruit look at Tennessee as a place to consider,” wrote Guarantano in a post on Twitter (X). “They are running NFL concepts and schemes all over [the] tape this year. Don’t let the tempo steer away from the play calls and style of play.”

Rival programs love to negatively recruit against Tennessee by questioning the Vols’ offensive style.

It’s a roadblock that Tennessee has had to overcome in some recruiting battles.

However, after recruits see the film of Tennessee’s offense this season, that negative recruiting pitch may no longer carry much weight.
