Emotions were running high in the final minutes of the Tennessee Vols’ 30-28 loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Music City Bowl on Tuesday evening in Nashville.

The situation got so intense with under two minutes to play in the fourth quarter that Vols head coach Josh Heupel appeared to shove one of his assistant coaches.

Heupel was in the middle of complaining to officials about a potential missed penalty on Illinois when the shove happened.

Why did Josh Heupel shove interim defensive coordinator William Inge?

Illinois methodically drove down the field late in the fourth quarter while chewing up clock with the Vols clinging to a one point lead.

With less than two minutes remaining in the game, on a second down play at the Tennessee 15 yard line, Illinois appeared to get away with breaking the huddle with 12 players.

Illinois wide receiver Hank Beatty went to line up in formation before sprinting off the field when he realized he was the 12th man.

After the play, it looked like Heupel and Inge both had something to say to the officiating crew. That’s when Heupel pushed Inge out of the way.

That’s probably not as bad as it looks. I’m guessing that Heupel was simply trying to keep Inge away from the officials to avoid a potential sideline warning/penalty.

Anyone who’s been in the throes of competition understands that emotions can run high in the moment. And that seems to be all that was going on between Heupel and Inge in that instance.
